Don’t Feel Like Working Out? You’re Not Alone!

Don’t Feel Like Working Out? You’re Not Alone!

“My body tells me no.” ~My Body/Young The Giant

OK, so this song is actually about not quitting and pushing your body to keep going, but for this post that line seems a good fit.

Sometimes….you just don’t feel like exercising. Me neither. However—and there is always a however—we need to, both for our health, our fitness and our moods.

This morning I had another moment of not wanting to work out. I thought about putting if off until later in the day (and I will still fit in some push ups and dips before the day is up), but I looked at my schedule and thought, “Ain’t gonna happen. I have to do it now.

My home gym is a wonderland of fun and low cost workout equipment, but I just couldn’t bear the thought of using any of it—or so I thought. Then I realized that what I couldn’t bear the thought of was another workout with me, tee hee. (Just like sometimes when I teach too many Spinning classes I think, “oh no, her again?” Ha!)

I am a trainer. I know what to do and I know how to work out.
I just didn’t feel like doing it.

Usually when I feel this way I block off a few minutes here and there for mini workouts throughout the day (more on that later. They are super effective for your body and for tricking your mind.) Today I decided to scrap my “workout as usual” and go for something different: A workout by someone else on YouTube.

I alternated parts of two (actually three) routines from FitnessBlender. The videos are free and pretty solid. (Note, I do not know the people at FitnessBlender, or really what they do—but I like their workouts.) My arms felt shaky after using lighter than normal weights so I know I was working. Plus I like that the woman demonstrating the exercises wasn’t scantily clad or preening and moaning all over the place. It was too early in the morning for a “I’m too sexy” routine. Time actually flew by and the original 15 minutes I had planned to squeeze in today turned into about 40 minutes, so yay me!

If you don’t feel like working out, do it anyway, but do it differently.

Take a class, turn to the web, or hire a trainer for just one session. Grab a workout buddy or your child. It doesn’t matter what it is, as long as it’s something. It also doesn’t matter if today was your “upper body” day and you did abs and toes (he, he.) Truly, it doesn’t.

As Nike says, “Just do it!”
