Wow...Helen, I've been sitting here reading all your blogs. First off, you are an amazing writer. Second, your story is so similar to mine, it's crazy!! One of these days we will talk about it but I got up to about the same weight (185 about 5 years ago). I lost it (took about a year 4 years ago)and was down to 115 until about a year ago. Then some crazy events occured with one of my teen kids and I rapidly put back on 20 pounds...ugh! Then, in January, I was in a terrible car accident. The accident sort of "woke me up". When I first started spinning, I actually still had an injured shoulder from the accident. Now, my shoulder feels better...due to the exercise - I'm sure! I haven't lost weight yet but I did lose 4% body fat. I love spinning!! It's a whole new life for me. I used to go to "Happy Hour" almost every night. Only, it wasn't really making me happy. Now, my happy hour is at 9:15AM weekdays in Spin at the gym. Thank you so much for being an inspiraion to me!!!

Good for you for getting right back on track! I go through the same cycle every few months. I tell myself it's not horrible, though, and get right back on the horse. It's rewarding to know that the person in control of your life is you, and even though you may go off a day once in a while, it's not the end of the world and no one around you will think different of you (unless you steal their food!)

Good luck :)

Anytime! That's what this is for...to realize that we all face similar problems, stresses and triggers, and to learn from others on how they cope. I want it to be more personal and for us to share.

I was laughing at a magazine article about making better food choices when you are tired. Their recommendation was to "plan to manage your fatigue next time." Uhm..if you work and have kids, there is 24/7 fatigue plus surprises (like a cold). Managing fatigue is not an option; managing our reactions are. It made me aggravated, he, he.

I was all about salt, carbs, and fat today. I so badly wanted to get in the car and drive-through somewhere and order a large fries. I didn't do it. I just kept thinking about the movie Super Size Me and Food Inc. and avoided the drive-through altogether. I, too, cannot live without bready foods. My neighbor brought me freshly baked banana bread this morning. My husband baked corn bread with our healthy style chili last night. All these temptations around me make me want to rip my hair out. I just have to keep my eye on the calorie count. Everything in moderation. Or under 1400 cals in my case. Sigh. Oh, not to mention, the stress of work and school make me want to eat, eat, eat. Trying to do it all with this horrible head cold just causes me more stress. Thanks for letting me vent.

Maybe there is truth to both being hardwired and conditioned but regardless you have found the key = balance. It is the little things. You are aware and you are making the choice for you.
Great post and great way to connect to others that maybe having the same challenges. :)

I like your 'balancing act'
So true that it is important to find the balance.
You proved to yourself that you could do all those wonderful things to improve but there was something missing - balance. Its great to see how you have reflected on this and have adjusted to find a happier you.
Keep it going sQ.

Exactly, Alicia. Rest renews you and keeps you going. Having a "day off" from working out or a "non-gym day" is invaluable. Thanks for sharing.

I can't tell you how important my Sunday off from work, exercise and doing anything serious is. Sure, when I try to sleep end I sometimes wake up at my usual 7-8am, but at least I let my body decide. I also take Monday off from exercise at the gym, but I usually end up restless enough to do some abs and push-ups. Come Tuesday, though...after a nice rest, I'm ready and itching to kick butt again. The rest has been so important for me, not just physically, but mentally. Knowing I'll have my reward days makes those Friday mornings at the gym a tad easier. It's like pushing through that one last effort at the end of Spin knowing...oh yes, there's recovering coming up, just one more minute, you can do it.
